Still in ST 120
Hey all:
No word from the IT folks about the program, so we’re meeting in ST 120 in the AM. Bring all your work; we’re working on maps now.
Google Docs
Hey all:
Some of you have been added to the Google Doc, but I think you might be a bit confused.
- Go to Google Docs
- Click on your class (EMB 265, MIN 252, JOU 220)
You should see the outline; however, the class outline stopped after week 4, I think, since you are now working on your projects.
If you try this and it still doesn’t work, ping me. I’ll be in the lab tonight at 445. IM might be best. I’ve helped a few students out already, and basically, it’s been the above problem. No worries if it’s not. We’ll get you hooked up.
Lab Today
I’ll be in the ST 120 lab at 445 today. I’ll be there for a few hours. Feel free to stop by if you’re looking to get some work in - or if you have questions.
Using Lexis-Nexis
I got a good question on searching in Lexis-Nexis from Brytani. She asked how you string together search terms. Here’s a quick guide:
- You can do commas if you want any of the words (Big, Red, Machine)
- You can use + if you want all the words (Big + Red + Machine)
- You can use ” ” if you want the words together (”Big Red Machine”)
Also, make sure you choose as many publications as you can initially - and make your search very broad to begin with - and then you can hone it down. If you need help, let me know what you are searching for -= and what terms you are using.
And finally, you may want to use Google News first. Sometimes, that helps you figure out other terms you can search for.
Two Thoughts on Success
I dislike poetry a great deal, which makes what I’m about show you make little sense.
These are two poems that I have kept within arms length of me as I went through college, entered the workplace and found myself surrounded by people who all seemed to know each other and understand my job better than I did.
There were many lonely days, and in the dark hours I took solace here.

Great writers feel their words. They become an extension of themselves. There will be moments when you find yourselves at the mercy of those words. They will take over and transform your story into something much bigger than you.
These moments are why we spend so much time on structures and grammar and rules and formats. Out of these, comes the moments. Please take a moment to read this, and keep a tissue near:
Wrestler takes a shot at the impossible
In his last match, Cullen Fitzgibbons, of Los Alamitos High, found a way to turn around four straight losing seasons.
Garageband Instructions
This is mainly aimed at the EMB 265 Broadcast News Writing class; however, it’s not a bad idea to give everyone a shot at this.I’ve posted the instructions for setting up, recording, editing and exporting/importing files in Garageband on the Google Doc for the class.
I’ll be adding a few instructions for Soundtrack, which is a more advanced editing program. There will be times when you’re sound won’t exactly match up; there is a simple way to raise the levels of your piece. There will be a time when you’ll need to convert a certain type of audio file so it works in Garageband; Soundtrack does that quite well (if you don’t happen to have a converter - if you have a PC, there are free programs that do this).
So why did I add JOU 220 and MIN 252. Well, the journos — once you start lab, if you would like to learn how to create a podcast, we can do that with one of your stories; for the MIN 252 Non-linear and interactive storytelling, you can record short audio clips that can be included in your game (I believe).

Don’t ask. Just accept that you must know this for your life to have meaning at all. That’s not even a joke.
First watch, and then read this.
The Future of Journalism - A Talk By Me
Hey guys:
I’ll be giving a one-hour talk about the future of media to the NKY and Cincinnati Society of Professional Journalists, as well as local television stations. It’ s not required — but if you’re interested in a career in the media, it might be worth an evening.
Did I mention we have free food?

An overview of how new social technologies and integrated news departments create new business models.
MIN Movie Night
The MIN kids get together once a month (give or take) for a night of movies and generally relaxation and introductions. We use this time for kids to get to know each other – and have a little fun. Unfortunately, they got tired of my anime nights – so we’ve gone general. Well, nerdy general.
We’re having a Science Fiction/Double Feature (name that movie): TRON and The Wizard – bonus points to any one who can tell me what is the relationship is for these movies in terms of MIN?
Anyway – all are welcome. Here’s the particulars:
Who: Anyone
What: MIN Movie Night
Where: LA 110
When: Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 pm
Why: Because it beats Scantron sheets
