Thursday’s Classes
It’s been said before, but it will be said again. If all goes well, most of you will have the option to sign up for equivalent lab times.
For those who haven’t finished their proficiency tests, you will be doing that in class tomorrow. You will take them, turn them in and you will continue to do that until you pass. Honestly, if you aren’t finished tomorrow, you are officially very far behind.
Very far…
Bowling
Hey all:
I’m putting together an informal group of folks who like to bowl. As my MIN kids will tell you, I think it’s important to get together outside of school to socialize and have fun.
It’s by no means a requirement — dude, it’s bowling — but if you’re interested, shoot me a note or post a reply here. I’ll add you to the list. I think we’ll try to get together once or twice a month.
I will send out a note — and if you’re free, join us…if not, no worries. Significant others are always welcome.

Adrift Alternative
From Eric Hancock
Hey Brad, I just wanted bring this to your attention. For anyone else in MIN 252 looking to push their game a little further, Inform 7 is a fantastic alternative to Adrift.
It’s fairly non-technical, a bit more time-consuming than Adrift, but much, much more can be done with it. I’ll be using it mostly because of its “menu” capability–so that I can make conversation in my game more two-sided and realistic. (For instance, instead of being limited to “ask about _____, and tell about _____,” the player will have a few options of dialouge to choose from. This is critical to building the satire/humor theme in my game.)
In addition, they have a build for any Mac user. Here’s the link:
And if you have the time, check out the “extensions” under download to see just how much you can do with Inform 7.
Adrift — FINALLY!
Hey kids:
The IT department assured me that as of Friday, we will have Adrift in the BEP 306 classroom. I will let you know when — and if — that is the case. I will also find out what time the lab is free so that you may work on your projects outside of class (for those of you who don’t have a PC).
Once you get started generating the game, it shouldn’t take you too long.
Remember, though, before you start, I need to see the story elements we’ve discussed.
Early Morning Classes
Hey kids:
Northern Kentucky University is on a partial delay at this moment, which means all classes before 10 am are canceled. You can check out the message here.
NKU will open at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 12
Northern Kentucky University will open at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 12, 2008. All classes scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. or later will meet as scheduled, and all classes scheduled to begin before 10 a.m. are canceled. All faculty and staff are to report at 10 a.m.
I will post theĀ proficiency exams that still must be completed.
For those who want to turn in their 5 story pitches after the last class, you can do so. For those who want to turn in their story sheets (MIN 252), you can do so.
Thanks, and be careful today.
Lab Hours
Hey all:
Sorry for being MIA this weekend. I was in Chicago hanging with some writers and attending a poetry slam. That means no Internet.
I have posted our lab hours.
As of now, nobody is eligible for lab work. I expect this will change tomorrow (weather willing). Please make sure you check the NKU website between 6-7 am on Tuesday. The university will be posting the school’s status during that time.
Without further ado:
MIN 252
- proficiency tests passed
- all story components approved
EMBĀ 265
- proficiency tests passed
- 5 story pitches approved
JOU 200
- proficiency tests passed
- first story pitch approved
I will have the most current list available during class tomorrow. You will be taking tests and working on your pitches for approval.
We should be done with class starting tomorrow — as long as you have been working.
Your Tests
Okay:
I’ve spent the last few hours grading your exams and a couple things became clear. We have a little bit of work to do — and many of you haven’t taken any of the tests yet.
Just to be clear, you can’t get started on any of your class work until you have passed all the exams. The last hurdle you have to clear is to fix your pitches and create a timeline for your work. Nothing will be approved until you have passed all of your exams. We’re now four weeks in to the semester, which only leaves 11 weeks left.
I won’t be grading over Spring Break, as I’ll be working at an international conference. Sooooooo…
It’s best you get on the ball.
Got Your Papers
Hey all:
Chris just gave me a stack of papers. I assume everything is in there.
