“And”
I get on you about your writing because we’ve gotten sloppy as a culture. Don’t feel bad because even the professionals mess up. This from today’s ESPN article. Can you tell me what’s wrong?
The Volunteers, who were outrebounded 43-28, dropped to 0-5 in regional semifinals and finished with a school record for victories in a season.
JOU 220 Notes
Okay, here’s what we covered in class today:
- The Active Learning Document is due AFTER you turn in your completed packet.
- Exams will be back on Tuesday, with the final grade and comments.
- The next two stories, you will have limited edits from me. Story 2 (2 edits), Story 3 (1 edit). This means you will need to rely on your critique partner for a line-by-line, element-by-element edit. Make sure you go through each element and critique based upon the outline for writing a news story.
- The final exam, you will chose from a variety of stories. This will be to test your news judgment.

JOU 220: Active Learning Document
Most of you have turned in your first piece of writing, so now it’s time to take a second and reflect on what we’ve done with direct and applied learning techniques.
1. Pitching stories: We discussed where to go for stories and how to research stories. Describe the outlets you used to find the story you wrote about and the places you used to get background materials for the pitch. How did that match up with the directed learning we did re: the research and finding?
2. Preparing: We discussed writing questions and finding sources. Describe your process for finding sources — did you use any of the directed learning we did — and describe how you used the questions for your interviews (was it helpful or not, did you go off script, did you write out questions for follow up interviews?)
3. Writing: We discussed the component parts of a story. When you were writing, did you think about each component individually? Describe your process and how you wrote to the components.
4. Editing. We haven’t spent much time discussing the editing process, but we have done a fair amount of top and line editing. Describe your rewriting process in terms of the components of a story. When you were rewriting, how did you keep track of the story elements and how did you make sure you continued to write for those elements.
5. Next story. Describe how you will approach the entirety of this story differently based upon your first experience.
All Hands on Deck
This Thursday, I’ll need everyone in class. Please make sure you attend, otherwise you will miss important information about the class, the final projects and grades.

Barack on Race in America
I don’t care what political affiliation you are. I don’t care how interested you are in politics. This speech will likely be remembered as one of the first, honest discussions of race, politics and the United States in the modern age.
Please watch it. Listen to the words. Not as a Democrat. Not as a Republican. Not as a Libertarian. Not as anything other than an American. And remember that when we bring the national rhetoric down to its lowest common denominator, we are only harming ourselves.
We are a smart people, able to discuss things in nuance and understand many sides of an issue.
Critiques
Don’t forgot you need to 1) post your notes online and 2) get someone to critique your draft and turn it in.
A critique is either notes on your page or a written critique.
Active Learning Documents
Hey all:
Once you’ve finished your first assignments, I’ll have an active learning document for you. Please make sure that you receive this when you turn in your work.
Demo Day
Hey all:
A week from this Tuesday — March 25 — you will all demo your games in class. We have 6 weeks left and you’ll need to be working on your last adventure (which should be much larger in scope than your first adventure).
I’ll have the active learning document for you then as well.
You really need to be almost done with your game next Tuesday so you can focus on the last part of the class.
