For EDU kids in JOU…
Here is one of the pieces I was discussing the other day:
“In class, I have to power down”
At a recent digital education conference in San Francisco, one of the more memorable remarks quoted came from a child: “Whenever I go into class, I have to power down.” That roughly translates as: “What I do with digital technology outside school - at home, in my own free time - is on a completely different level to what I’m able to do at school. Outside school, I’m using much more advanced skills, doing many more interesting things, operating in a far more sophisticated way. School takes little notice of this and seems not to care.”
EMB 265: Week 2 Notes are Up
Hey all:
I’ve added the Week 2 notes to the Google Document for your viewing pleasure. Feel free to check them out to help you with your directed reading.
JOU 220: Week 2 Notes “Mostly” Up
Hey all:
I’ve added Tuesday’s lecture notes to the Google Doc and near the bottom of the document is the Word Tutorial, which we’ll go over on Tuesday as well. It’s not hard and if you’re nerd-a-rific like me, you might want to give it a shot now.
I’ll be adding Thursday’s lecture notes by Monday so you have a sense of what we will be discussing this week.
MIN 352: Wiki + Tutorials
Hey all:
I’ve launched a Wiki for the MIN 352 class, where you can put your developer blog (which would make it a developer wiki). I highly recommend using this because we can communicate with each other FAR more effectively.
- The Wiki will have ALL of the tutorials for the technologies we’ll be using in this class (and some that we won’t) so you will always have a place to go if you get stumped and I’m not around.
- The Wiki is also re-writeable, which means if you find something lacking or wrong YOU can correct it immediately to help out your fellow MIN 352′ers.
- The Wiki allows you to create short tutorials as well for new technolgies you come across IF YOU CHOOSE. It’s not a requirement for the class.
On Tuesday, I’ll hand out the in-class discussion forms for Thursday’s class; we’ll get you all added to the Wiki and create your own invididual pages, and do some basic work with audio, video and GUIs.
MIN 496: PBwiki + docs
Hey MIN 496:
Your documents for the class are up in the DOCS section; the syllabus will be updated with a timeline when you are finished with that.
For next week:
- launch your developer wiki (Please use PBWiki) and then you’ll need to add me with my GMAIL account;
- begin to put your timeline together with what you know is due (project, reports, presentations, usability tests)
- we’ll discuss on Friday potential project ideas (although you should have an idea from MIN 352); please use the Wiki to post your thoughts on potential projects.
next week
Hey MIN 499 (On Demand)
Next Friday, we’ll need to plot out the timeline for the class; you’ll need to make a decision about what company you’ll use (I would STRONGLY recommend Lightning Source).
That means you need to find a company, read their specs and begin to determine how and when you think you can get things done. I’ll take that and make a tentative schedule.
Nikki: would you please post your wonderful document on the MAIN PBWiki page so that we have that as a reference as we move forward.
pbwiki + such
I’ve added the rubrics to my website: http://www.thedudeman.net
- The syllabus is available under the “teaching” tab
- The rubrics and descriptions are available under the “docs” tab
The Wiki we’ll use is here: http://min499ondemand.pbwiki.com/
- I’ve added you to the Wiki with the above email addresses
- I’ve create individual pages for you (Grant, Nikki) and a main page
- You’re individual log should be kept on your page; the main page should be used for class discussions, questions and those things
NY Times: Barack Panoramic
View of Barack Obama’s Speech at Invesco Field in Denver
To MIN 352:
Here’s an interesting take on the start of Barack’s speech last night (please view it in full screen). This combines photography, audio and design together to give us a completely overwhelming view of what it must have been like last night.
To JOU 220:
The question for us is this: how do you (or do you) compete with a visual and audio story like this? What else would you bring to the table?
While we’re going to spend a great deal of time working on your writing, we must also think about what kinds of stories we want to write.
web + word tests
Here are your first two proficiency exams (and yes, JOU, it’s not due til Thursday). To see them in their entirety, make sure you click on the individual link
web apps + technologies
Hey MIN 352:
I’ll be adding to this list of software that we’re going to delve into on Thursday, Sept 4. There may be a little outside reading, but the best thing for you to do is to delve into this stuff and play around a bit. We’re going to spend some time tinkering with these programs.
As part of this discussion, I would like you to plan on demonstrating 2-3 technologies that you use (Ashley, don’t freak out). This is INFORMAL and won’t count towards the in-class assignments. However, I want everyone to get used to sharing their knowledge.
