Hey y’all:

Bring a hard copy (or computer) of Cluetrain to Starbucks at 9 am on Tuesday. I am driving down from Muncie that morning so if I am not there right on time, don’t leave :)

Also, please make sure you have tried to FTP your audio into the UPLOADS folder, installed the PodPress plug-in and added your audio to a POST. Use the Twitter feed. (Use the Twitter #min186 feed and email to try to accomplish this.)

Please check the Tuesday Wiki for the rest of the syllabus (there is one more cluetrain chapter).

This is a talk given by Clay Shirky, one of the leading voices discussion social media and storytelling.

  • On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy asked Congress to commit several billion dollars in funds so that America could lead the rest of the world to the moon.
  • On September 12, 1962, Kennedy visited Rice University, in Houston, to outline the effort.

The video is an art project celebrating the achievement of the decade-long effort that lead to the Apollo project, which placed 12 American men on the moon and cost 8 others their lives in this pursuit. As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, I hope you will take a minute to reflect on the glorious scientific age that we live in.

And to remember that our country’s true "manifest destiny" isn’t as the world’s police or superpower. We are more than that. If there is such thing as manifest destiny, it is to lead all of mankind into a place of peace and prosperity, of knowledge and science.

A goal we achieved on July 20, 1969 when two men — Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldren — touched down in Tranquility Bay while Command Module Pilot Michael Collins orbited above.

Don’t forget, you’re report is due on Tuesday. Don’t mess around with the fonts; it should be TWO FULL PAGES; it should be single-spaced. If you decide to put lots of spaces between paragraphs or the title and name, I will hand it back to you.

So let’s do this :)

We’ll meet at the Starbucks at 9 am on Tuesday. Bring a hard copy of your wiki posts or your computer. We’ll sit in the same location as we did the other day, unless it’s raining. If it rains, we’ll meet in ST 120.

Please make sure you are up with the reading.

Hey y’all:

Don’t forget to download TweetDeck (or if you just want to use Twitter.com and Twitter Search, you can do that. There are more Twitter desktop applications like TweetDeck. They are located in the footer section of Twitter.com).

Once you download TweetDeck, use the search key (it looks like a magnifying glass) to search #min186. That hashtag is what you should use whenever you post about the class.

Once you have THAT finished, I want you to send a hello note with the #min186 hashtag in it.

Now you’ve taken the first step into the TwitterVerse.

Dennis asked about Guy Kawasaki today. Here’s Guy and I co-hosting Accelerator, an 8-hour event at South by Southwest Interactive where start-up companies pitched their ideas to VCs and other media types.

Check out this panel on social media + journalism at the University of South Florida (although it’s not required):

This isn’t a requirement for the class, but this is a video that — if you want to understand the impact of a converation culture — you need to watch.

Hey y’all:

On Tuesday, we’ll be discussion Google Analytics and tracking numbers. This will become imporant as we go through the course. I’ve spent several years immersed in the analytics world — particularly at MIT where we made our money off advertising.

Here are my thoughts on the best way to approach analytics.

We’ll get your blog going with tracking (to go along with Share This, PodPress and WP-Stats) on Tuesday. Then this will start to make some sense. You know, hopefully.

Hey y’all:

Blog posts and responses due by 5 pm Friday. Please bring a HARD COPY of your Wiki response to “cluetrain manifesto” on Tuesday. We will sit outside (weather permitting) and discuss great things.

Please add at least (I stress AT LEAST) one more theme and two more widgets by Tuesday. If you have questions, first ask your group + then ask me. We’ll go over all these problems in class.

Please look at the Blog, Project and Report documents. Your first report is due very soon.
