Brad King

I lived in Cincinnati. Then I moved to Austin. Then Berkeley for grad school. I stayed for Wired and Wired News. Then I left for Austin to finish our book. Next to Boston and MIT. Now, I'm back home in Kentucky.

Greetings (Digital Media Minor) Programs:

At the end of January, I will be submitting a mass fix to your DAPRs.

The last year has been crazy as we move our program online. Lots of substitutions and all. To ensure that everything is correct and that you will graduate, I would like you to go through your coursework and provide me with an update for what you have done.

Please go to this form, and fill out the requestion information.

This exercise will help you figure out what you have taken and what you haven’t, but it will also serve as a record in case there is an issue later. We will have an account of our agreement on classes.

Mahalo.

If you are unable to convert your SWF file (Media Encoder does that), please bring your SWF file to class tomorrow so that I can grab it from your computer.

I will convert it at my house this weekend.

Greetings Programs:

Our meeting time is this Friday at 945 am. Please make sure you are all on time. The purpose of this meeting is to gather ALL of our materials, make sure we have everything, and start planning for next semester. Please do not come in with a ton of materials and ask “what should I do with this.”

What you should do with it is this: read below, make a plan for storing what we need. Raw files are mostly for you (although I would keep them for sure).

That said, here are all the instructions you’ll need to prepare for the end of class.

Greetings Programs:

Just a friendly neighborhood reminder that our Final Exam time is Thursday from noon-2 pm. Per the lecture, there is no formal class that day; however, I will need to collect videos from each group and you’ll need to make sure that you have turned in the packets.

Please bring your videos (Trailer #2 and the Screencast Presentation) to class. I will have an external hard drive so we can simply drag and drop. (If you want to try to drop them in the DropBox, I’ll remove them as soon as I can and let you know. If you can get them to me that way: no need to see me.)

On the DROPBOX server, I’ve placed two FINAL. folders. Please make sure that you’ve given me your Final Reports with all the materials (Group1.PostMortem), and the Final Production Journal PDFS (LastName.ProdJo).

If you have ancillary materials that don’t fit in the Post Mortem, put them in that folder (Group1.NameOfSheet)

I will post the videos for everyone to see!!

I thoroughly enjoyed our time together this semester, and I look forward to seeing how you apply this in the Senior Capstone project. I have high hopes for you all.

Brad

Greetings Programs:

A reminder that our class starts Tuesday, Dec 13 at 215 pm. Be prompt. If you are late, DO NOT knock or come in. We are presenting. I shall check the door before each person. If you are late and I call your name, you will receive a ZERO on your presentation.

I have 4 folders on the DROPBOX server, all labeled FINAL. — please make sure you materials are appropriately added.

Your VIDEOS should be uploaded to: www.vimeo.com (username and password emailed!)

  • Title should be LastName.SiteScreencast (the words “SiteScreencast” not your actual site name)

If you are turning in your paper AFTER the start of class tomorrow, you will need to deliver the FINAL PAPER 1 to by in hard copy form my NOON on Friday. I am shutting down my Dropbox so you won’t have access to it anymore.

Questions? Email or text me. Good luck, people.

Brad

As part of this year’s Digital Storytelling class, the groups are required to produce two trailers to promote their semester-long projects. As always, prepare for the weird.

Greetings Programs:

You can find today’s lecture notes on the class website, or here:

ICOM 210: How To Write an Academic Paper

ICOM 375: The Final Packet

Greetings Programs:

I’m going to pass out a paper Jennifer George-Palilonis and I are submitting to the Popular Culture Association. This will help guide you in rewrites.

I’ve also attached a Literature Review sheet, which is something I use before I write by Lit Review. You’ll see how I summarize information from papers, and then you can see how that is transformed into an academic paper.

Greetings Programs:

For those of you doing research papers, citations matter a great deal. But they are not easy to get right. To help out, I suggest using ZOTERO, a plug-in for Firefox. Trust me when I tell you: this will change your life.

Greetings Programs:

A few notes on your papers, which you will have the ability to turn in up until noon on Friday of exam week. I will expect hard copies of your work, which means you will print them out and turn them to the main journalism office in A.J. or directly to me.

EIGHT pages means EIGHT pages. In my book, 7 1/2 pages is the same as no pages. If you write the bare minimum (8 pages), you have done average work. If you have written less than that, you have done failing work.

Standards are non-negotiable.

Thesis: Write One

Abstract: This should be a cogent summary of your points, not a meandering walk-through of your thinking. You should be able to articulate 3-5 main ideas that you will discuss. Those 3-5 ideas should have a flow to them (e.g. transitions) that connect them to each other.
