Greetings Programs:

For those of you doing research papers, citations matter a great deal. But they are not easy to get right. To help out, I suggest using ZOTERO, a plug-in for Firefox. Trust me when I tell you: this will change your life.

Greetings Programs:

Each year, I spend a good deal of time working with students on some very basic In Real Life skills that are necessary to survive post graduation. We discuss:

  • How to find a job through networking
  • How to approach prospective employers
  • How to create a budget (I have a handy Excel sheet that does the Life Calculations for you)
  • How to understand your contract negotiations at a job
  • How to negotiate your salary
  • How to manage your work life as a professional (and not as a student)

I spend so much time of this, it seems like maybe I should try to handle this in one fell swoop. Before I do something like that, though, I’d want to make sure that I have enough people to make it worth everyone’s while. I’m thinking at least 10 folks for two hours on a weekend or a Friday.

Interested? Thoughts?

Greetings Programs:

I’ve said time and again that if you want to be a writer, you need to learn the tools of the trade. In our case: grammar.

Despite what you’ve been told, there aren’t exceptions to rules and unknowable aspects about grammar. Like math, it’s a logical (albeit human) construction. You can learn it. You need to learn. If you don’t learn it, you’ll live in a world where this happens: Robot Journalist Out-Writes Human Journalist.

Deadspin conceded. They published a follow up, saying that — in this case — the machine did write the better story.

"The image of the robots typing wins me over for sure," says Carmichael. "And on top of that, in some cases, as we’ve seen with Narrative Science’s story, they actually can produce the stronger story."

Ms. Laura Allen upon having Running Times publish her feature story:

It’s time to redefine the meaning of the word “failure.” On the road to invention, failures are just problems that have yet to be solved.

Greetings: I’ve just returned from the South by Southwest Interactive Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas, and since a few of you have asked what went on I thought I’d have one big download day.

The folks in the Center for Media Design have been kind enough to offer up their room for this, but space is limited so place make sure you let me know if you’re planning on attending.

  • What: A Recap of the SXSW Interactive Conference
  • Where: Center for Media Design
  • When: Friday, April 1 @ 1 pm

If you ever wonder why I teach, and why I do the things that I do…this is the best explanation I can give. Since I approve this message, you can be sure the language is not anywhere near safe for work:

This is Taylor Mali, a teacher and slam poet. You can visit his website here.

Greetings Programs:

One last message from me to you.

Enjoy your Spring Break. Make it memorable. To do that, you must be around to remember. So come back in one piece, and unbroken.

See you in two weeks.

End of line.

We have our fourth Professional in Residence tomorrow (Tuesday) in LB125, and keep in mind this is an afternoon event this time, starting at 4 p.m. Some of you hold class at that hour, and it would be great if you could arrange to bring them to Gerry Dicks’ presentation.

Gerry will be talking about the state of business reporting in Indiana and how it is changing because of the Web 2.0 media. You probably know Gerry from his years in reporting on Indianapolis television. He is now president and founder of Grow Indiana Business and still contributes business analyses to local television newscasts.
